Vice President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang represented His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama at the 50th Anniversary of the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG). This event reflected SWAG’s enduring influence and commitment to celebrating Ghanaian sporting excellence. I was also pleased to receive a special award on behalf of His Excellency the President.
The Vice President expressed appreciation for SWAG’s work in uplifting Ghanaian athletes.
She said, ”their recognition of sportsmen and women inspires them to uphold the highest standards and reminds us that Ghana is a nation rich with talent”.
She added that ” many of our youth rise from modest beginnings to conquer national and continental arenas”.
Professor Opoku-Agyemang reaffirmed the government’s belief in the potential of sports as a driver of national development. Real transformation requires deliberate investment, sound policies, modern infrastructure, and a strong grassroots system, not only in schools but also for young people who fall through the cracks but still deserve every opportunity to thrive.
She said the Ministry of sports and recreation has carefully reviewed its focus, with the aim of modernizing Ghana’s sporting infrastructure to align with the national reset agenda.
A solemn moment was observed for the young men and women affected by the recent stadium stampede. We continue to hold them and their families in our prayers. The incident strengthens our resolve to improve safety, infrastructure, and crowd management at sporting venues across the country.
To the athletes, coaches, referees, administrators, and journalists who were honored, the Vice President offered warmest congratulations, saying their dedication continues to inspire millions.
She congratulated SWAG on their golden jubilee.
”For five decades, their work has been indispensable, documenting our sporting journey, advocating for athletes, and preserving the stories that define our national identity”, she reiterated.
