The Resident Representative of Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung in Nigeria, Moritz Sprenker, has underscored the vital role of press freedom in sustaining democratic governance, accountability, and the protection of human rights.
Speaking at an event held to commemorate World Press Freedom Day, Mr. Sprenker said a free and independent media remains one of the strongest pillars of any democratic society.

According to Mr. Sprenker, the media serves as a critical watchdog that helps ensure transparency in governance and prevents the abuse of power.
“A free and independent press is essential to maintaining checks and balances in society, ensuring that power is not exercised in secrecy and that political decisions remain open to public accountability,” he stated.
He further emphasized that press freedom extends beyond the media industry and has direct implications for national development, human rights, and good governance.
“Press freedom matters far beyond the media sector; it directly affects the protection of human rights, development, and transparency,” he added.
His remarks come at a time when journalists and media practitioners around the world continue to face increasing challenges including censorship, intimidation, misinformation, and threats to independent reporting.
Stakeholders at the event reiterated the need for governments, civil society organizations, and international partners to strengthen protections for journalists and uphold democratic values that guarantee freedom of expression.
