The Trump administration is recalling nearly 30 career diplomats from Ambassadorial and other senior Embassy posts, as it moves to reshape the U.S. diplomatic posture abroad with personnel deemed fully supportive of President Donald Trump’s America First priorities.

State Department officials say chiefs of mission in at least 29 countries were told last week their assignments will end in January. Many of these diplomats were originally appointed during the Biden administration and survived an earlier round of removals that focused mainly on political appointees. But this week, notices went out from Washington informing them of their imminent departures. Ambassadors typically serve three to four years, but they remain at posts only at the pleasure of the President.

Officials stress that those affected are not losing their jobs in the foreign service. Instead, they will return to Washington for reassignment if they choose. The State Department declined to confirm the exact number of diplomats involved, but defended the changes, calling them a standard process in any administration.
