President John Mahama has held what he described as ”productive discussions”, with João Cravinho, the European Union Special Representative for the Sahel, on Tuesday. The meeting focused on reinforcing the strategic partnership between Ghana and the EU as we work together to address critical challenges related to security, governance, and development in the Sahel Region.
President Mahama reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to proactive diplomacy in mediating relations with the Alliance of Sahel States of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger. He said Ghana believes that creating a unified regional platform, including a revitalized Accra Initiative, is essential to effectively combat terrorism and violent extremism in our sub-region.

Ghana’s developmental achievements provide a strong foundation for resilience, but ”we recognize the need for continued capacity building in key areas”, President Mahama noted.
He expressed optimism that, ”the EU will continue supporting Ghana’s efforts to enhance maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea”. Furthermore, Ghana is committed to expediting the EU-Ghana Security and Defence Partnership.
