President John Dramani Mahama will today engage the Media and Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) on illegal mining (galamsey) on Friday, October 3, at the Presidency in Accra.
The engagement aimed to provide a platform for frank and constructive dialogue between the Government and civil society on the menace of illegal mining, with a view to harnessing collective expertise, perspectives and solutions to address the national challenge.
Historically, galamsey referred to traditional small-scale mining practices in Ghana, where local communities would gather and search for gold in rivers and streams. However, over time, the term has taken on a broader meaning, encompassing both legal and artisanal small-scale mining.
