Personality Profile: Vice President Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang

Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang is a trailblazing Ghanaian academic and politician. Born on November 22, 1951, in Cape Coast, Ghana, she made history by becoming the first female Vice President of Ghana, sworn in on January 7, 2025.
Before her vice presidency, Opoku-Agyemang served as the Minister for Education from February 2013 to January 2017 under President John Mahama’s administration. During her tenure, she introduced several transformative reforms, including the Inclusive Education Policy, which aimed to ensure children with special needs could access quality education.
Opoku-Agyemang has had a distinguished academic career, serving as the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast from 2008 to 2012. She has also held various academic positions and has published several books and articles on literature, education, and African diasporic studies.
Throughout her career, Opoku-Agyemang has received numerous awards and honors for her contributions to education, literature, and women’s empowerment. She has been recognized as one of the most inspirational female leaders in Ghana and has been listed among the 100 most reputable Africans.
