The Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has sounded a word of caution to Members of Parliament that he will not shield any MP from any security agencies under the guise of Parliamentary immunity. He says he will not condone any abuse of such privilege as it is not a license to disregard the law. Mr. Bagbin said this as he welcomed Members of Parliament back from recess. He said he will not protect anyone who will deliberately use their privilege to frustrate investigations.
He stressed that Parliamentary immunity is not designed to obstruct justice.
Majority leader, Mahama Ayariga said the Majority Caucus will spearhead a rigorous pursuit of accountability in Ghana’s public financial management. He said they will demand a full-scale parliamentary investigation into the handling of COVID-19 expenditures to ensure transparency of how emergency funds were utilized. He commended the Finance Minister, Cassiel Ato Forson for the gains the cedi has made against the dollar so far.
The Deputy Minority, Leader Patricia Appiagyei said Parliament must defend Ghana’s democracy by maintaining its independence and holding on to the the principle of accountability.
