Nigeria’s Dangote Refinery has successfully exported its first shipment of gasoline to the US, with commodities giant Vitol and North American distributor Sunoco taking delivery this week, marking a new chapter in Africa’s role as an emerging fuel exporter. The tanker Gemini Pearl delivered approximately three hundred and twenty thousand barrels of gasoline to Sunoco’s terminal in Linden, New Jersey.
The cargo was sourced from the Dangote Refinery, one of the largest in the world with a capacity of six hundred and fifty thousand barrels per day and traded through Geneva-based Mocoh Oil. The shipment confirms that the refinery’s output meets stringent U.S. fuel quality standards, a key concern for international buyers. The Dangote Refinery, after years of delays, is now dramatically altering energy dynamics.
It is set to drastically reduce Nigeria’s dependence on imported fuel, a major drain on foreign exchange, while positioning the country as a key exporter to European and American markets. The refinery’s output is expected to bring greater energy independence to Africa’s largest oil-producing nation and redefine trade flows across the Atlantic Basin.
The Industry Monitor IIR Energy reported that the refinery’s gasoline production unit will undergo two to three months of maintenance, potentially halting further exports in the near term
