Professor Adeola Adenikinju, President of the Nigerian Economic Society (NES), accompanied by Mr Solomon Terkura Mathew, the Head of the Nigerian Economic Society (NES) Secretariat, paid a courtesy visit to Professor Nazifi Abdullahi Darma, Commissioner for Internal Services (CIS) at the ECOWAS Commission, Abuja on the 4th of April 2025.
During the meeting, Professor Nazifi Abdullahi Darma, provided a comprehensive overview of his academic and professional trajectory, followed by a detailed presentation on the role and structure of ECOWAS as a pivotal regional body. He emphasized the functions of the ECOWAS Commission, with a specific focus on the Department of Internal Services, which he oversees.
Professor Adeola Adenikinju, in response, shared his academic journey and articulated the significant contributions of the NES to Nigeria’s economic development policy. He highlighted the Society’s rich history, noting its establishment in 1957 as the oldest professional association in the social sciences in Nigeria. Professor Adenikinju expressed his appreciation to Commissioner Darma for his ongoing advocacy for sound economic policy and for serving as an exemplary ambassador of the NES. He also outlined the achievements of his administration, including the revitalization of state chapters, the progress on the construction of the national secretariat in Abuja, and preparations for the upcoming NES conference scheduled for September 2025.
Professor Nazifi Abdullahi Darma acknowledged and commended Professor Adeola Adenikinju’s efforts in strengthening and repositioning the NES. He reiterated his commitment to supporting the organization and provided valuable insights on strategies to enhance the NES’s relevance in the Nigerian economic policy-making process.
