The Ministry of Education has directed authorities at the University of Cape Coast (UCC) to work closely with the Ghana Police Service to conduct a full and transparent investigation into the death of a Level 200 student whose body was discovered on a beach in Cape Coast.
The student, identified as Innocentia Atsufui Avinu, was reported missing before her body was found at Hutchland Beach near Duakor in Cape Coast. The discovery has sent shockwaves through the university community and sparked widespread calls for answers.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Education, Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu expressed deep sorrow over the incident and extended condolences to the bereaved family, friends, and the University of Cape Coast community. The Minister emphasized the need for a thorough investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the student’s death.
According to police accounts, the 20-year-old student was last seen on the evening of June 11 after reportedly receiving a phone call and leaving her hostel. Concern grew among friends and colleagues when she failed to return. Her body was later discovered after residents of the Duakor community alerted police.
The UCC District Police Commander, ASP Abdul Abubakar, indicated that preliminary examinations revealed no visible signs of physical injury on the body. The remains have been deposited at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital mortuary, where a post-mortem examination is expected to determine the exact cause of death.
The Ministry has urged the public to refrain from circulating unverified information that could compromise ongoing investigations. Authorities have assured the public that every effort is being made to uncover the truth behind the tragic incident.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has intensified investigations, with additional investigators reportedly deployed to assist in establishing the circumstances leading to the student’s death. The university community continues to mourn as students and staff await official findings from the ongoing probe.
