On the occasion of International Day of Democracy, marked on September 15, annually, the Vice President of the Ghana Journalists Association, (GJA), Rebecca Ekpe has drawn the attention of the media to their critical role in a democratic dispensation. The role of providing platforms for civil discourse, the platforms that would give room to citizens to engage and contribute meaningfully to the conversation of a better Ghana.
In a statement, Madam Rebecca Ekpe pointed out the need to protect the media space and the freedom of expression guaranteed under Chapter 12 of Ghana’s 192 Constitution.
”Ladies and Gentlemen, let’s protect Chapter 12 of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution, on this day of International Day of Democracy 2025, on the theme “Democracy for All: Building Inclusive Futures”, she wrote.
”Let’s protect the media freedom with responsibility!”.

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF DEMOCRACY
As we celebrate the International Day of democracy today, l would like to once again draw attention to the vital role the media plays in serving as a bridge between the government and citizens. Indeed, the media is tasked with an inate responsibility of providing “essential information” for informed decision-making.
Clearly, in a democracy, the media is required to CREATE platforms for citizens engagement, whereby they can express their opinions, engage in debates, and participate in the democratic processes.
Ladies and Gentlemen, let’s protect Chapter 12 of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution, on this day of International Day of Democracy 2025, on the theme “Democracy for All: Building Inclusive Futures”.
Let’s protect the media freedom with responsibility!
