The High Court in Accra has sentenced police officer Inspector Samuel Twumasi to life imprisonment for the murder of his girlfriend, identified as Maadwoa, in a case that sparked national outrage and renewed calls for stronger measures against domestic violence.
Inspector Twumasi, who was stationed at the Kumasi-based police command, was found guilty of shooting and killing his 26-year-old girlfriend, Maadwoa, at Adum in the Ashanti Region in April 2023. The incident, which occurred in broad daylight, was captured on CCTV and shared widely on social media, leading to his swift arrest and prosecution.
During the trial, prosecutors argued that the act was premeditated, describing it as a “cold-blooded killing driven by jealousy and rage.” The court heard that the deceased had allegedly ended her relationship with the officer, which enraged him. Twumasi reportedly confronted her and shot her multiple times, killing her instantly.
Family members of the late Maadwoa expressed mixed emotions after the sentencing relief that justice had been served, but grief that nothing could bring their daughter back. “We thank God for justice, but our pain will never go away,” one family member said.
The Ghana Police Service, in a statement following the ruling, reiterated its commitment to upholding discipline and ensuring that officers who commit crimes face the full rigors of the law.
Inspector Twumasi will serve life imprisonment at the Nsawam Medium Security Prison.
