The Regional Conference on Information Integrity in West Africa and the Sahel, held in Praia, Cabo Verde, convened over 400 participants from across the region
Participants from across West Africa and the Sahel gathered in Praia, Cabo Verde, for the Regional Conference on Information Integrity. Delegates and participants included government officials, relevant regulators, information and electoral commissions, civil society, media, academia, technical community, and international organizations.
The conference was organized by the UNESCO Regional Office in Dakar and the Government of Cabo Verde. Its objectives were to adopt an integrated approach to policy on information integrity; enhance digital platform governance while protecting human rights; build public resilience to disinformation and hate speech; promote synergies among stakeholders and enhance inclusive access to information and public interest data.
The conference outcomes reaffirmed the principles of the Windhoek+30 Declaration, which UNESCO’s General Conference unanimously endorsed as a landmark regional and global commitment recognizing information as a public good essential to democratic governance and human rights, and build on the implementation of the Guidelines of the Governance of Digital Platforms.
The discussions, debates, and resulting policy framework will serve as key contributions to the African Union’s broader efforts to enhance information integrity and to advance the Global Digital Compact.
