President of the Ghana Journalists Association, Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, has given the Ghana Armed Forces a two-week deadline to provide a comprehensive report on investigations into the alleged assault of two journalists in Accra.

He said the GJA expects details of the investigations and information on disciplinary action taken against any personnel found responsible for the incidents.

Mr. Dwumfour made the demand at the launch of the 30th GJA Media Awards in Accra, where he stressed the need for journalists to be allowed to perform their duties freely and safely.

The journalists involved are Philip Abutiate of Bullet TV, who was reportedly assaulted during a demolition exercise at La Beach, and Kweku Dennis, popularly known as Sika Official, who was allegedly attacked at La Pleasure Beach.

The GJA President said attacks on journalists undermine press freedom and democracy, warning that failure by the relevant authorities to provide a satisfactory report within the two-week period would compel the Association to pursue the matter through legal, institutional and public accountability channels.

Mr. Dwumfour also called on journalists to uphold accuracy, fairness, verification, independence and ethical standards, particularly amid the rapid spread of misinformation, disinformation and hate speech on digital platforms.

He said although technology and the tools used in journalism continue to change, the fundamental responsibility of journalists remains the same — to seek the truth, provide context, inform the public and hold institutions accountable.

The GJA President disclosed that the Association received 327 entries from 206 journalists for this year’s awards, comprising 125 online, 111 television, 46 print and 45 radio entries.

Two new categories have also been introduced — the New Media Platform Award and the Governor’s Economic and Financial Story of the Year Award — to recognise excellence in digital, economic and financial journalism.

The 30th GJA Media Awards will be held in Accra on Saturday, November 7, 2026, under the theme, “Celebrating Excellence, Advancing Media Freedom and Combating Hate Speech in the Digital Age.”
