Social media platforms were awash with reactions on Tuesday after images and videos of individuals wearing Fugu, a traditional Ghanaian attire, attracted widespread trolling and commentary online.

The outfit, also known as the Batakari, is traditionally worn in Northern Ghana and holds cultural significance, symbolising heritage, identity, and leadership. Despite its importance, the attire became the subject of mockery and derogatory remarks from some social media users after the images gained traction online.

The online backlash prompted responses from cultural advocates and members of the public, many of whom condemned the comments and described them as disrespectful to Ghana’s cultural diversity. Others used the opportunity to educate the public on the historical and symbolic value of the attire.

Observers say the incident highlights the growing problem of online trolling and the ease with which cultural expressions are targeted on digital platforms. Media analysts note that controversial content often receives increased engagement on social media, contributing to the rapid spread of such reactions.

The development has renewed calls for responsible social media use and greater cultural awareness, with commentators urging the public to show respect for traditional symbols and practices.
