Celebrating the Life & Legacy of Madam Victoria Agbotui (The Power Of Single Mothers)
Madam Victoria Agbotui, mother of the late former President Jerry John Rawlings, remains a powerful symbol of strength, discipline, and the quiet role women play in nation-building.
Born on September 9, 1919, and passing on September 24, 2020 at the age of 101, she lived through many generations yet remained firm in character.
An Anlo Ewe woman from Dzelukope in the Volta Region, she raised her children under difficult circumstances, single-handedly carrying the burden of motherhood at a time when support for women was limited. The Scottish father of Jerry John Rawlings, James Ramsey John, never lived with them, leaving Madam Agbotui to shape her son’s life through resilience, discipline, and strong moral values.
Known as a tough, independent, and disciplined woman, she instilled principles that later reflected in the leadership style of her famous son.
Truly, behind many great leaders stand even greater women whose names history often whispers instead of shouts.
Beyond motherhood, Madam Agbotui also served the nation as Head of the Catering Department at the Presidency during her son’s tenure, carrying out her duties with dignity and dedication.
She was laid to rest at Dzelukope after a burial service at the forecourt of the State House on October 24, 2020. In a touching turn of history, her son Jerry John Rawlings followed her less than two months later, closing a remarkable chapter in Ghana’s story.
Her life reminds us that nation-building begins at home, in the values taught by mothers and in the sacrifices of good women who give everything and ask for little.
Today, we celebrate Madam Victoria Agbotui not only as the mother of a president, but as a shining example of the importance of women in society.
Rest well, Madam Victoria Agbotui mother, disciplinarian, nation-builder.
