CAPTURING THE NATION’S SOUL: GBC 90 YEARS OF IMPACT
I believe the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) also (GTV) remains the soul of Ghana, due to its pivotal role in shaping the nation’s identity, culture, and values.
Established in 1935, the GBC has been a cornerstone of national communication, promoting unity and understanding within Ghana’s diverse society. But, for some of our younger generation, let me share some core points why GBC holds the esteemed position as pace setter in broadcasting in Ghana.
Cultural Preservation and Promotion: GBC showcases Ghanaian music, dance, literature, and traditions, fostering a sense of shared cultural heritage. The Ghana Broadcasting’s radio and television programming provide a platform for local talent, preserving Ghana’s rich cultural identity.
National Consciousness and Unity: By broadcasting news and information that keeps Ghanaians informed about national issues, GBC contributes to a sense of national pride and unity. Its commitment to public service (now interest) broadcasting ensures that citizens are united in their understanding of current affairs and shared history.
Public Service (Interest) Broadcasting: GBC’s mandate requires it to provide informative, educational, and entertaining programming that aligns with Ghana’s cultural values and aspirations. This commitment to public service broadcasting sets it apart from commercial media outlets, prioritizing the needs of the nation over profit. Infact, GBC is the only Media House in Ghana mandated to provide public service information.
Accessibility and Inclusivity: With 33 radio frequencies broadcasting in 25 languages and more, GBC ensures that its content reaches a wide audience, including rural communities and marginalized groups. This accessibility makes it a vital institution in promoting national development and social cohesion.
Legacy and Impact: As one of the oldest state-owned broadcasters in Ghana, GBC has played a significant role in shaping the nation’s media landscape. Its legacy extends beyond broadcasting, influencing Ghana’s cultural, social, and political fabric.
With 90 years of Impact and making history, GBC’s enduring presence and commitment to public service broadcasting have earned it a revered position in Ghanaian society, making it an integral part of the nation’s soul.
GBC no doubt remains and would remain the TRUSTED VOICE OF THE NATION!
