Residents of Sarpeiman and Pobiman in the Ga West Municipality say they are living in constant fear as pedestrian knockdowns continue to claim lives on the Accra–Nsawam highway.
The busy stretch, which serves as a major link between Accra and the Eastern Region, has become a danger zone for pedestrians due to the lack of a footbridge. Many residents say crossing the highway has turned into a daily gamble for survival.
“For us, crossing the road is like risking your life every morning,” said Kofi Mensah, a resident and trader. “We have lost friends, schoolchildren, and even the elderly to speeding vehicles. How many more must die before the authorities act?”

Parents in the area are particularly worried about the safety of their children who attend schools on the opposite side of the highway. Some residents say they have resorted to escorting their wards across the road each day, while others have withdrawn their children from nearby schools to avoid the risk.
Despite several appeals to the Ga West Municipal Assembly and the Ministry of Roads and Highways, no concrete steps have been taken to address the situation.
Community leaders warn that if authorities fail to act swiftly, they may organize a demonstration to demand the immediate construction of a pedestrian footbridge.
“We’re not asking for much,” said one assembly member. “We just want a safe way to cross the road and protect our people from needless deaths.”
