At #UNGA81, important conversations brought together governments, UN representatives and civil society to reflect on democratic resilience, the future of UN leadership and peace in the Horn of Africa.
International IDEA Secretary-General Kevin Casas-Zamora also engaged with leaders and representatives of Member States, keeping democracy and the challenges confronting democratic institutions firmly on the multilateral agenda.
Democracy, Multilateralism and Peace at #UNGA81
These conversations remind us that democracy is not sustained by institutions alone. It requires dialogue, accountability, inclusion, civic participation and strong partnerships across governments, civil society and international organisations.
Together with Club de Madrid, Switzerland, Open Society Foundations, the Horn Center for Democracy and Open Society-Africa, International IDEA helped bring these critical issues into sharper focus.
As countries navigate growing pressures on democratic governance, conflict and multilateral cooperation, the question remains:
How do we build democratic systems that are resilient enough to withstand today’s challenges while remaining inclusive, accountable and responsive to citizens?

The conversations at #UNGA81 are an important part of that continuing dialogue.
