Germany defender Sara Doorsoun has ended her national team career after not being nominated into the squad for next month’s Euro 2025 tournament in Switzerland.
Doorsoun, 33, won 59 caps, debuting in 2016 and playing her final match last week against Austria. She won Olympic bronze in 2024 and was a runner-up at the last Euros in 2022.
Doorsoun was only nominated on standby for the Euros in the wake of injury and decided to quit.
“It was clear that this day would come at some point,” Doorsoun said on Instagram.
“But to be honest, it wasn’t the plan for it to happen before the tournament in the summer. After I was told that I was ‘only’ on call for the tournament, I decided to end my career after almost 10 years in the national team.
“It wasn’t a rash or defiant decision, but rather a feeling that now is the right time for me.
“I always wore the shirt with pride,” she added in a statement issued by the German FA. “I am very grateful for all the fantastic memories and moments I could experience with the national team.
“I wish with my team only the best at the Euros from the bottom of my heart.”
Germany coach Christian Wück said he regretted but respected Doorsoun’s decision.
Doorsoun will continue playing club football at Eintracht Frankfurt.
