A ban on guns and knives is to be introduced on Berlin’s public transport system.
The plan was announced by authorities in the German capital on Thursday after a video call with representatives of police forces and transport companies.
The ban is set to be in force on all underground and regional trains, buses, trams and ferries, as well as at railway stations.
Authorities are aiming to expand police’s powers to increase security and enhance citizens’ safety.
It is unclear when the ban will be introduced.
Berlin has had three no-knife zones at the crime hotspots of Leopoldplatz, Görlitzer Park and Kottbusser Tor since February.
The police can carry out checks in the locations regardless of specific suspicions.
Debates over how to increase security on public transport in Berlin reignited after a fatal knife attack in the underground last weekend.
