The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin, has refuted long-standing claims that the former Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya, Sarah Adwoa Safo, voted for him during the election that made him Speaker of Ghana’s 8th Parliament.
Mr. Bagbin was elected Speaker in January 2021 after a tense and chaotic voting process in Parliament, which was marked by heated exchanges and disruptions. Following the vote, rumours circulated that one Member of Parliament from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) had defied the party’s directive and voted for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate a move many speculated was made by Adwoa Safo.
However, in addressing the matter, the Speaker dismissed the allegations, insisting that Adwoa Safo did not betray her party. According to him, the former Dome-Kwabenya legislator has been unfairly accused over the years, despite a lack of evidence to support the claims.
Mr. Bagbin urged the public and political commentators to put the matter to rest, stressing that Adwoa Safo’s loyalty to her party during the Speaker election was not in question.
His clarification comes amid renewed discussions within the NPP regarding internal divisions and loyalty issues during the 2021 parliamentary proceedings.
