“Ghana Presudent Mahama saved my mother’s life” — Kenyan media personality, Wanja Nyarari, shares heartfelt account of President John Dramani Mahama’s kindness during her mother’s illness.
In a touching post, Wanja recounted how, while on duty, she had the honour of serving H.E. John Dramani Mahama during Uhuru Kenyatta’s tenure. One morning, as she reported to work, he noticed her eyes were red and inquired with genuine concern.
She explained that her beloved mother, whom she called her ‘Iron Lady,’ was critically ill and dependent on an oxygen machine. President Mahama expressed his desire to meet her and accompanied Wanja to her home.

There, he climbed all the way to the rooftop where her mother sat in the sunshine to get her daily dose of vitamin D.
President Mahama asked how they had ended up living where they were. After she narrated her life story, he embraced her and said words she says she will never forget:
“From today, you are my daughter. This is your brother, Sharaf Mahama. When you come to Ghana, I will introduce you to your mummy and your other siblings. You will never be left alone. And your children will be my grandchildren.” He then asked when she was born. Upon learning it was on a Friday, he gave her a new name, Afia Mahama, filling a fatherly gap in her life.

He regularly checked on her mother and even offered to fund her treatment in Germany, but the elderly woman declined. Wanja revealed that after her mother’s passing on January 14, 2026, President Mahama delegated Rev. Fr. Dr. Anthony Amissah, SVD, a lecturer in Psychology and Dean of Students at Tangaza University in Kenya, to extend condolences and provide financial support.
