Ambassador James Victor Gbeho is widely regarded as one of Ghana’s most distinguished diplomats in global governance and international cooperation. From 1980 to 1990, he served as Ghana’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, where he played a central role in advancing Africa’s perspectives on peace, security, and development.
In July 1994, the UN Secretary-General appointed him Special Representative to Somalia, tasking him with mediation and peacekeeping coordination during one of the most complex humanitarian crises of the era. The following year, in September 1995, he was named ECOWAS Special Representative for Liberia, further reinforcing his reputation as a seasoned conflict-resolution strategist.
Ambassador Gbeho later became President of the ECOWAS Commission, a position to which he was elected unanimously at the 37th Summit of ECOWAS Heads of State.
Over several decades of service, he has represented both Ghana and the West African region at the highest multilateral forums, consistently advocating for African priorities such as conflict resolution, trade justice, and equitable development, and positioning Ghana as a respected and influential voice in international diplomacy. #un80ghana
