Former German foreign minister Annalena Baerbock will officially take office as president of the UN General Assembly.
She will assume the role from her predecessor, Philémon Yang, the former prime minister of Cameroon, at the start of the assembly’s 80th session in New York.
Baerbock was elected to the position in June by an overwhelming majority, despite a campaign by Russia to derail her bid.
The 44-year-old Green Party politician, who served as Germany’s foreign minister until May, is only the fifth woman to hold the post.
The position is largely ceremonial and should not be confused with the role of UN Secretary General António Guterres.
As president, Baerbock will chair General Assembly sessions and help determine the agenda and procedural rules for meetings.
