President Mahama to hand over Accra-Kumasi Expressway Right of Way

President John Dramani Mahama is expected to officially receive the cleared right-of-way for the Accra-Kumasi Expressway today, Monday, September 14, 2026, marking a major milestone in preparations for construction of the flagship road project. The handover ceremony, organised by the Ministry of Roads and Highways in collaboration with the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), is scheduled to take place at Ejisu Kwaso in the Ashanti Region. The Ghana Armed Forces has completed the clearing of approximately 175.6 kilometres of the proposed expressway corridor in 19 weeks—one week ahead of the original 20-week target. The military-led exercise involved clearing a 120-metre-wide corridor through parts of the Greater Accra, Eastern and Ashanti Regions to prepare the route for subsequent stages of the project. The Accra-Kumasi Expressway is a flagship project under President Mahama's Big Push Infrastructure Programme. The proposed six-lane expressway is expected to significantly reduce travel time between Accra and Kumasi, improve road safety, ease congestion and facilitate the movement of people and goods. Following the completion of the right-of-way clearance, attention is expected to shift to the finalisation of detailed engineering designs and procurement of the main construction contractor. Government has indicated that the project is advancing towards the construction stage. The Finance Minister, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, earlier disclosed that US$1.7 billion had been deposited at the Bank of Ghana and ring-fenced for the project, pending the award of the main construction contract. However, the project has also affected some homes, farms and properties along the corridor. Some affected landowners and farmers have called for the timely payment of compensation for properties and livelihoods impacted by the clearance exercise. The formal handover therefore represents a significant step towards translating the government's long-standing plans for the Accra-Kumasi Expressway into actual construction.
