A kingdom once defined by uncertainty and divisions has shown the world a different story — one of unity, tradition and a renewed commitment to peace. The peaceful funeral rites of the late Ndan Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama and the successful enskinment of Regent Kampakuya Naa Yakubu Abdulai have become a defining moment in Dagbon’s history.
The National Peace Council has praised the people of Dagbon for the orderly and dignifie
d manner in which the transition was conducted, describing the events as a reflection of resilience, maturity and a collective determination to protect the peace achieved over the years.
The Council says the smooth transition demonstrates the strength of dialogue, respect for tradition and the willingness of stakeholders to put the interests of the kingdom above differences. It also paid tribute to the late Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama, whose reign was remembered for humility, wisdom and efforts towards reconciliation and unity among the people of Dagbon.
The peaceful ceremonies were made possible through the combined efforts of the Dagbon Traditional Council, the Royal Family, government, security agencies, emergency services, religious leaders, civil society groups, the media and the people themselves — all working together to ensure that a significant moment in the kingdom’s history passed without tension.
But as Dagbon celebrates this milestone, a new responsibility emerges protecting the peace beyond the ceremonies. The National Peace Council is urging chiefs, elders, opinion leaders, women and young people to rally behind the Regent during the regency period and ensure that the Dagbon Constitution and agreed customary roadmap guide the journey towards the selection of the next Yaa Naa.
The story of Dagbon is no longer only about the conflicts of the past; it is now about the possibility of a future built on reconciliation, trust and unity. The question facing the kingdom is whether this historic moment can become the foundation for generations of lasting peace and development.
