Ghana began their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign on 17th of June in Toronto on a winning note after a dramatic stoppage-time goal secured a 1-0 victory over Panama in Group L.
With both teams locked in a tense battle for much of the contest, the Black Stars struggled to find a way through a determined Panamanian defense. Panama looked poised to earn a point after frustrating Ghana’s attack and creating chances of their own.

Deep into added time, substitute Brandon Thomas-Asante initiated a swift counterattack before setting up Caleb Yirenkyi, who calmly fired home the winning goal in the 95th minute.
The late strike sparked jubilant celebrations among the Ghanaian players and fans, turning what appeared to be a frustrating evening into a memorable victory.
Earlier in the game, Ghana goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi played a crucial role in keeping Panama at bay with a series of important saves before leaving the pitch due to injury. His performance helped ensure the Black Stars remained in contention until the decisive moment arrived.
The result gives Ghana an early advantage in Group L as they prepare for tougher tests against England and Croatia. Panama, meanwhile, will be left to reflect on missed opportunities after coming within seconds of earning a valuable point.
