Benin used to be seen as a model democracy in West Africa, but Sunday’s elections show if that reputation still holds. Recent changes have limited political competition, made it harder for the opposition, and raised questions about whether institutions are truly independent.
The elections might run smoothly, but what really matters is if they are provide an opening for a return to more transparent, competitive, and credible electoral reforms.
